Health Promotion

During my time at the University of Georgia, I have dedicated my four years to studying health promotion with an emphasis in behavioral medicine in the College of Public Health. This major and emphasis prepare students for medical programs while also focusing on disease prevention and community health. The major includes four semesters of sequence courses culminating in a 150-hour internship. Major courses include:

  • Community Health
  • Program Planning and Development
  • Research Methods and Design
  • Professional Writing
  • Epidemiology
  • Health Policy
  • Chronic Disease and Prevention

Students are prepared to address the social and behavioral aspects of public health and the prevention of health-related problems through the creation of multilevel interventions that positively impact the health and well-being at individual, group, and community levels. My personal applications of these interventions are below:

Literature Reviews

Literature reviews in public health provide context to a health problem or intervention to understand what is known, uncertain, and what gaps remain. Writing literature reviews builds advanced skills in critical thinking, professional writing, and research strategies.

In my health promotion classes, I have been given the opportunity to write two literature reviews about topics of my choice:

Needs Assessment

Needs assessments are used to identify and prioritize the health needs of a population. It involves collecting and analyzing data to determine gaps in health needs, population-specific challenges, and available resources. Collaborating to write a needs assessment allowed me to learn skills in advocacy, resource alignment, and team coordination.

The needs assessment was conducted as a group project and followed the case of an aging woman experiencing housing and food insecurity and social isolation. The needs assessment followed the health problem and its impact, what is needed, the available resources, and sustainable solutions with evidence-based research:

Brief Report

Brief reports offer a concise document that communicates key findings, recommendations, or policy implications to the public. They are marketed for quick understanding and action about public health topic. Creating this brief report allowed me to solidify my visual literacy, persuasive writing, and audience-centered communication skills.

The brief report provides a quick overview of facts and misconceptions about prescription stimulants:

Technical Manual

Technical manuals are a comprehensive guide that details evidence-based information of health topic. The manual is designed for the public to have as a framework for understanding, preventing, or managing a specific health issue. Creating technical manual with a group allowed me to build on my visual communication, health literacy translation, and team collaboration.

The technical manual provides a comprehensive guide to reproductive health in college students:

Program Plan

A program plan outlines the development, implementation, and evaluation of a health intervention that is aimed at improving health outcomes in a specific population. The program is evidence-based, goal-oriented, and responsive to community needs. This program plan allowed me to work on intervention design, budget planning, and evaluation design.

The program plan includes a needs assessment, behavioral theory framework, logic model, budget plan, implementation plan, evaluation plan, and marketing strategies. The program targets older women (65+) with hypertension in a rural clinic in Albany, GA. The program uses the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills Model to educate participants about hypertension and adequate medication adherence.
