Pathway to Medical School Program
As a participant of the Pathway to Medical School (PTMS) Program hosted by SOWEGA-AHEC in Albany, GA, I completed over 200 hours of clinical, research, and didactic training in collaboration with the Albany Area Primary Health Care (AAPHC) and Phoebe Family Medicine Residency.
This simulated 5-week residential program offered firsthand insight into the challenges and rewards of practicing primary care in a rural, medically underserved community.
I shadowed physicians across hospital, outpatient, and resident-run clinics, observing the nuanced demands of rural medicine and hard work required to serve vulnerable populations. I was also given opportunities to speak firsthand with medical school admissions teams, participate in mock interviews, and tour a local osteopathic medical school, all experiences that deepened my understanding of the path to medicine and affirmed my commitment to becoming a physician.
A highlight of the program was participating in a team-based research project in outpatient clinics, where I surveyed over 50 community members and co-developed a research poster for presentation. This experience enhanced my skills in community-based research, data collection, and collaborative analysis.
With this research project, I have been able to travel to St. Simons, GA for the Georgia Rural Health Association (GHRA) Fall 2025 Conference and to Atlanta, GA for the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP) Fall 2025 Conference.
