Today at the CARE Center, I spent time working on the middle stage dementia caregiver guide while Sarah went over the early stage. Scout, the Master’s student, and I also helped Sarah work on “breaking” a new survey she was planning to launch at a networking event. We spent some time figuring out changes that could be made and getting the survey updated. I have found that there are some subtle and some extreme changes that are to be made to the middle stage dementia caregiver guide, and it really shows how the progression of the disease can make it difficult to talk about for caregivers. Being able to talk about dementia realistically while also showing empathy makes it a real challenge, as I want people to understand the breadth of information while also being understanding to how overwhelming caregiving can be.
