Week 3 Competencies & Reflection

Competencies (1 & 2)

1.1 Plan Assessment

1.1.1 Define the purpose and scope of the assessment.

1.1.3 Identify existing and available resources, policies, programs, practices, and interventions.

Summary: This week, I worked with Sarah to narrow down the scope of the first book which is a caregiver guide for early-stage dementia (1.1.1). We used other resources as well as the previous caregiver guide to create an outline for the first book while also adding new information that we found to be important (1.1.3).

2.2 Define desired outcomes

2.2.1 Identify desired outcomes using the needs and capacity assessment.

2.2.3 Develop vision, mission, and goal statements for the intervention.

Summary: Once Sarah and I narrowed down the goals of the first book, I was tasked with creating an outline for the book. This is where we identified what we wanted to see the same and new/changed from the old care guide to this one (2.2.1). We decided that the new care guide should identify an “Everything Binder”, a chapter that informs caregivers on every document they should consider for their loved one with dementia for planning and implementing care. The rest of the chapters should mirror the old care guide, however the information and structure will be completely different. These chapters outline our vision, mission, and goal statements (2.2.3).

Reflection: What, So What, Now What?

This week at the CARE Center was a little difficult. With just Sarah and I discussing the same concepts multiple times, it felt like we could not come up with new ideas, and I felt stuck. After reviewing multiple care guides, I still felt lost on the exact purpose of our care guides as well as what exactly what information would be added to the books. However, after many discussions, Sarah and I came up with new ideas such as the “Everything Binder” and how to best organize all of the information for the first volume. This experience helped me to understand that planning and implementing are a difficult part of the health promotion process, as there are many ideas, opinions, and frameworks that can be applied to different situations. I am glad that Sarah and I were able to narrow down the vision, mission, and goals of the project so that I could start working confidently.
