Today with the CARE Center, I volunteered for a dementia-friendly event at Studio Athens. The idea behind this event was to create a space where those with dementia, their caregivers, friends, and family could all enjoy a dance show without the expectations of sitting still and quiet. Attendees were allowed to sing and dance along as much or as little as they liked. I helped Sarah to set up the event, setting out snacks and drinks, signs for parking and directions, and putting out chairs. I also helped to direct parking traffic before the event began. The dance show itself was perfect for viewers. There was a mix of tap and contemporary dancing with different costumes, props, and music that kept everyone interested the whole time. Sarah also made surveys for everyone to fill out, and the reviews seemed to be pretty positive, with most people wanting more events like this one each month. Overall, I enjoyed the event and was glad I got to show my face to others that I have not yet met. I found volunteering to be a rewarding experience and worth all the time!
